Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)

Home
ROP4parents Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is a blinding condition of the smallest pre-term infants due to incomplete vascular growth to the periphery of the retina. Areas of avascular retina- produced by prematurity, sickness and fluctuating oxygen concentrations in the first weeks of life, produce chemical messengers (VEGF) that cause abnormal, leaky blood vessel proliferation, bleeding and eventual retinal detachment, cataract, glaucoma and blindness. Premature infants MUST be screened for ROP risk, and then serial ophthalmic exams can rule in, or rule out, threshold ROP. Threshold ROP can be treated with laser, cryo, or injection of VEGF blockers like Avastin.
