Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) is an abnormal development of blood vessels in the retinas of very premature infants that can lead to blindness and disability. Variations in NICU conditions, including fluctuating oxygen concentrations, increase the risk for advanced stages of ROP including the wrost, called stage 5, or "retrolental fibroplasia" or RLF. Neonatologists SCREEN for ROP by referring the youngest (gestational age less than 32 weeks) and the smallest (birth weight less than 1600 grams) for staging confirmatory exams by ophthalmologists. With serial staging exams, some infants have sufficiently severe ROP evolving to reach "THRESHOLD" for peripheral ablative laser or cryo therapy. | ![]() |
