Dr. David Guyton (Johns Hopkins) and Dr. David Hunter (Harvard) since 1991 have developed an objective vision screener that utilizes birefringence (radially oriented light arising from the foveal nerve fibers) to detect whether the child is fixating on the target, or whether they are not yet paying attention, or whether they have strabismus that could lead to amblyopia independent of refractive error.
